Money is flowing over the U.S.-Mexico border, but it’s going north

In 2006, Hazleton, Pa., became the center of the national debate about illegal immigration. Faced with an influx of immigrants, many of them from Mexico, it was the first city to pass local ordinances that banned hiring or renting to unauthorized immigrants. Although the courts eventually struck down the ordinances, Hazleton’s city council had accurately captured the fears that many Americans had about the wave of unauthorized immigration then coming from south of the border, fears that still echo in this year’s election campaigns.

How Latinos Power the American Economy

We are business leaders and we are here to tell you a surprising truth: Latinos are big drivers of economic growth. Unless you run a retail business, you probably have no idea what we mean. Few on the campaign trail or in the media ever talk about Latinos and economic growth. The candidates and reporters have a hard time getting past immigration.

Politicians are wrong about Latinos

Economic uncertainty and our unsettled politics lead the news today, but the most consequential business story is the one not told. It is the good news story of a group of Americans – Latinos – who have been quietly and increasingly powering U.S. economic growth, both as job creators and as consumers. As the U.S. population ages, and as we struggle against the headwinds of an anemic global economy, U.S. Latinos are forming the core of America’s New Mainstream Economy. A handful of simple facts tell the story.

CEO Daily: Friday, March 18

Four words have echoed through Trump campaign rallies and TV interviews these past many months: “Make America Great Again.” And clearly they’ve resonated with millions of voters. Putting aside the question of whether the slogan itself is a false narrative (“America is great already”)—or merely empty, jingoistic blather—it’s worth a moment to imagine how Trump might accomplish that goal. To ask: How can the U.S. compete and win in the world over the next decade?

Cisneros Hispanic Leadership Institute Opening

Last week in Washington DC, Gil and Jacki Cisneros cut the ribbon on the Cisneros Hispanic Leadership Institute, a beautiful building in the middle of George Washington University! This Center was created by the university with the Cisneros’ generous $7 million donation last summer, with the goal of empowering Latino high-achieving students. Click here to view the article. I was honored to be present at the ceremony and at the special luncheon at the home of George Washington U. President Steven Knapp and his lovely wife. The luncheon gathered Latino and non-Latino leaders from all around the country to celebrate the center opening, and to congratulate Gil and Jacki. The best part of the event was Gil’s speech, when he talked about how he arrived to the school at 17, his journey since then, and his life-mission of giving back… there was not a dry eye in the room. Congratulations Gil!
