2022 LDC Latinos in Media Report Full-Year Update

The 2022 LDC Latinos in Media Report provides a deep dive into the current state of Latino representation in media, covering primetime television, cable, and streaming platforms. This report is part of the Latino Donor Collaborative’s ongoing efforts to shine a light on the disparities between the economic power of U.S. Latinos and their visibility in media. Despite contributing $2.8 trillion to the U.S. GDP, making them the fifth-largest economy globally, Latinos remain vastly underrepresented in the content that dominates American screens.

This report is unique in its comprehensive analysis of over 1,400 shows and 300 films, offering a full census rather than a mere sample. It exposes the significant gaps in Latino representation, with only 2.6% of lead roles in shows and 5.1% in films being filled by Latinos. The report also highlights the alarming trend of negative stereotypes, with many Latino characters being cast in roles that perpetuate harmful myths. Additionally, the absence of Latino talent behind the camera is stark, with only 1.5% of episodes directed by Latinos and an equally dismal representation among showrunners and writers.

The 2022 LDC Latinos in Media Report not only identifies these issues but also offers actionable solutions.

One key resource introduced is The Source, The Latino Talent Database for Hollywood, which provides over 3,000 vetted names of Latino professionals in the industry. This tool aims to dismantle the myth that there is a lack of Latino talent available for hire.

By leveraging the data and insights provided in this report, Hollywood can tap into the growing economic and cultural influence of the Latino population. Latino representation in media it’s not just a DEI effort, but a bussines opportunity.
